Scaffolding platform shocking photo

The use of barrels to hold up this scaffolding platform is another example of poor planning and dangerous innovation. The barrels are not suitable scaffold foundations and simply cannot support the weight of the scaffold and loads on it, such as bricks and people.
Other bodgey extras include:
• welded barrels
• loose bricks around the site
• unsecure ladder
• single-plank working platform
• no fall protection/guardrail
How hard can it be? Take time and organise the right equipment for the job prior to starting work.

Grinder Shocker

Thought you’d seen the last of these killing machines? This had numerous faults including:
- No guard
- The second handle had been removed
- The manufacturers plate could not be read, so we do not know the correct RPM of the grinder
- The cable was damaged and taped over
- The unit was not tagged and tested
- The body of the unit was damaged and the front and rear sections were twisting all over the place.

Remembrance Day in Commonwealth countries 2011

Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day and Veterans Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognized as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the official end of World War I on that date in 1918; hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice ("at the 11th hour" refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 a.m.)

Transparent Car Factory

Transparent Factory is the English name of an automobile production plant owned by German carmaker Volkswagen, designed by architect Gunter Henn, and opened in 2002. The original German name is Gläserne Manufaktur (factory made of glass, literally vitreous manufactory). Both the German and English names are a word play on the double meaning of transparent and glassy, referring to both optical transparency and transparency of the production process.

New release DVD - The Safe Use of Ladders

Falls represent the largest single cause of accidental death in the workplace.

About 40% of these falls result in falling from one level to another, many from ladders. Many of these falls are serious, but more importantly, many could have been avoided if safety procedures were followed. This program looks at the selection and safe use of ladders in the workplace.

Over-complicated Road Signs!

Road signs and symbols are designed to quickly and efficiently convey a particular message. Sometimes, they don't quite hit the mark bordering on the ridiculous!

Understanding Safety Awareness

In the past, safety was often regarded as just an adjunct to production.

Today, it is well recognised that managing safety issues efficiently and effectively will contribute to an organisation's financial viability and it will demonstrate a commitment to the most valuable asset of any organisation; its people.

Safety awareness is the starting point to accident prevention.

'I saw the sign'

This 'I saw the sign!' was sent in by Akum; one of our readers.

This graphic warns of the danger of wearing loose fitting clothing around a bench drill press. It is important to never become complacent or forgetful of what you are wearing when using a bench drill press, lathe or any other rotating/moving piece of machinery. The potential entanglement accident can be quick and deadly. This particular hazard summary is from the Ministry of Labour, Ontario, Canada:

"A lathe operator was fatally injured while polishing a slotted steel shaft with emery paper. Before putting it in the lathe, he had machined three keyway slots along the 3" diameter shaft. After securing it between the chuck and the tailstock of the lathe he began polishing with a long strip of emery paper looped around the rapidly rotating shaft. The slots caught the strip of paper, which entangled his gloved hand and pulled his arm around the shaft, severing it from his body. He died later from extensive head, neck and chest injuries."

Fatigue in the Workplace

Fatigue is an issue that we can no longer ignore. The reason is that many international research bodies have concluded that being awake for 17 hours or more, have the same affect on the human body as having a 0.05% blood alcohol content.

Feeling tired or drowsy after prolonged mental or physical effort at work is normal. Fatigue, however is more than just feeling tired. Fatigue is an acute and/or chronic state of tiredness that can lead to mental and/or physical exhaustion. Fatigue prevents people from functioning within normal boundaries.

Fatigue is a diffucult issue to manage in the workplace. This is the best DVD on fatigue awareness out right now. To get it CLICK HERE!
